I used to think becoming a coach would be simple. I’m a strategic thinker, so I assumed: get trained, learn the framework, apply the tools, and go coach! But from the moment I began coach training, I realized it would be far more transformative than I had imagined.
It took me what felt like forever to earn my ACC. I already had almost enough hours for PCC when I applied for ACC. But the hours weren’t the hard part. The hard part, and the gift, was the inner work.
The real shift happened not in technique, but in presence. Coaching has transformed how I present myself in both my professional and personal life. I listen more. I’m more curious. I’m more present.
Now, when clients come to coaching looking for better strategies, they’re often surprised. I ask them at the end of our engagement: “What would you tell others about coaching?” And the answers are always something like:
- “You’ll be looking within.”
- “It’s an exercise in self-awareness.”
- "Do it, because when you know yourself better, you do things better.”
Clients complete their coaching engagement with much more than strategies. They create a greater connection with themselves.
Many lessons have shaped me, and I didn’t learn them alone. Learning partners became a safe, inspiring space to practice and grow. We exchanged feedback, explored our competencies, shared our struggles, and celebrated our wins. These relationships have become long-term support systems. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
The ICF Arizona community has also played a significant role in my personal and professional development. I joined book clubs that had a profound impact on my growth.
Two books stand out:
- Breakthrough Coaching by Marcia Reynolds
- The Heart of Laser-Focused Coaching by Marion Franklin
The conversations from those groups were energizing, practical, and full of connection.
If you're a coach at any level, my encouragement is this: keep learning, keep connecting. Certification is a milestone, not a finish line. The more you invest in becoming, not just doing, the more impact you’ll have.
